Eagle Protect has formally submitted a Citizen Petition to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) calling for a ban on vinyl (PVC) disposable gloves used in food handling.

This action has direct relevance for New Zealand, where food safety regulations reference FDA standards for food-contact materials

Eagle’s petition urges the FDA to protect consumers, food workers, and the environment by phasing out vinyl gloves for food contact and replacing them with safer and better-performing alternatives, such as nitrile and higher-quality polyethylene gloves.

Why It Matters for New Zealand

Vinyl glove box

Vinyl (PVC) gloves are still used in food sectors across New Zealand, despite increasing global scientific evidence of risks, including:

  • Food contamination from chemical migration and weak microbial barriers

  • Worker health concerns linked to phthalate plasticisers and endocrine-disrupting chemicals

  • Environmental impact due to toxic pollutants released across the PVC lifecycle

For a country whose food reputation underpins major export industries, these issues pose preventable risks to food businesses, workers, and consumers.

Eagle Protect’s Position

Eagle Protect is committed to advancing science-based standards for glove safety and transparency across the food industry.

Key points aligned to the petition’s relevance for NZ include:

  • Regulatory Alignment: NZ references FDA guidance for food-contact materials. A U.S. decision on vinyl gloves would influence glove procurement in NZ.

  • Export Integrity: Outdated vinyl gloves anywhere in a supply chain can pose risks to trust and compliance in global markets.

  • Sustainability & Compliance: As chemical and microbial standards tighten globally, moving early strengthens NZ’s competitive position.

Eagle Protect stopped selling vinyl gloves in 2018 after emerging research highlighted risks to food safety, public health, and the environment. Subsequent glove research led to the development of Delta Zero™, Eagle’s verification program for high-performing, safe nitrile gloves.

A Safer Future for Food Protection

Eagle Protect’s mission is clear: the gloves used to protect our food must also protect people, supply chains, and the environment.

This petition represents an important step toward raising global standards for glove and food safety. It encourages New Zealand to continue its food safety leadership with the products that handle our food.
